ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th Gen — the 2018 flagship ultrabook at working-laptop money

The X1 Carbon 6th Gen (2017) is the premium thin business machine of its year: a Core i7-8650U with 32GB of RAM at $278 — under the $297 business-class median, and a notably low ask for the flagship name. The measured profile is flagship-typical with honest caveats: graphics zero against the near-floor class median (no dGPU, standard X1 compromise), reliability 24 versus 42.5, performance index 28.4 versus 41.5 — the class median includes newer machines.

What it does well

The 8650U is the vPro quad-core of its generation, and with 32GB of RAM this configuration is still a serious working laptop: development, heavy office multitasking, and long typing sessions all fit. The Carbon chassis stays light and stiff, the keyboard remains the reference standard, and at $278 the flagship tax has fully depreciated away.

The trade-offs, stated plainly

Graphics at zero: the X1 line never carried a dGPU, and gaming is out of scope. Reliability at 24 versus 42.5 is the age marker — an eight-year-old ultrabook whose battery is a question mark. Performance sits below the class midpoint strictly on generation grounds; the silicon was quick in 2018 and mid-pack now.

Price trajectory

From a $1,300 launch configuration it has declined at about 7.6% per year to $278, with a projected $237 in two years (15% further). Flagship-name machines hold value slightly better than the E/L lines, and the curve is flattening.

Against its neighbors

An HP EliteBook 735 G6 at $293 and a ThinkPad E15 Gen 2 at $319 sit above; a ProBook 650 G5 at $256 and a ThinkPad L14 Gen 1 at $264 below. The L14 Gen 1 at $264 is the newer-silicon value alternative for $14 less — the X1 counters with the lighter, stiffer flagship chassis and 32GB.

Bottom line

Fairly priced flagship ergonomics at value money: light carbon chassis, reference keyboard, real quad-core with 32GB. For a typing-heavy professional who carries daily, it is one of the better buys in band — with graphics off the agenda and battery health checked before purchase.
