ProBook 4540s — a 2012 budget business workhorse at true commodity price

The 2012 ProBook 4540s is HP's volume business laptop of the Ivy Bridge era: an i3-3110M, a Radeon HD 7650M and 16 GB of RAM. At $117 it is one of the cheapest business-class machines in the catalog. The scores need honest framing: a mainstream graphics placing (45.85, top quarter) that flatters the hardware, mobility 15 against a 60 median, and reliability 16 against a 42.5 median.

What $117 buys

A functional, serviceable typewriter: the 4540s chassis was built to be opened with one screwdriver — RAM, disk and fan all accessible — which is why so many survive. The 16 GB of RAM (two upgrades past its typical shipping config) gives the machine multitasking headroom its CPU doesn't fully exploit, and the i3-3110M dual-core still handles documents and patient browsing.

Reading the numbers honestly

The mainstream graphics placing reflects the business class's low graphics baseline, not the HD 7650M's capability — it was an entry part in 2012, and measured game fit for this class of hardware shows minimum-tier modern titles failing. Mobility at 15 (−75%) marks a 2.4 kg desk machine. Reliability at 16 (−62%) flags thirteen years of service; budget for a battery if one is expected to hold charge.

Price trajectory

From roughly $1,300 new to $117 today at 5.95% per year, projecting to $104 in two years (11.6% lower). The machine has reached terminal value — further decline is measured in tens of dollars.

Where it sits against peers

Pricier neighbors are the EliteBook Folio 9480m ($135) and EliteBook 820 G2 ($124) — slimmer, newer business machines; cheaper options are the ProBook 650 G1 ($109) and Dell Latitude E6430 ($101). The whole band is commodity-priced history where condition is the only real differentiator.

Bottom line

Worth the asking price as a near-disposable duty machine: a workshop terminal, a child's homework machine, a donate-in-a-year purchase. The graphics placing is cosmetic, the mobility is desk-bound, but the serviceable chassis and 16 GB make it more usable than its price suggests. No serious work should be trusted to it.
