The EliteBook 8540w was HP's flagship 15-inch mobile workstation around 2010, here with an i7-720M (first-generation Core), a Quadro FX 880M with 1 GB and 16 GB of RAM. At $167 it is priced far below the business-class median of $297, and every performance axis reads at the floor: CPU 1.55, performance index 4.97, reliability 5. The workstation badge is now history, not capability.
What the Quadro FX 880M meant
In its day the FX 880M was an entry ISV-certified part — the minimum for professional OpenGL applications. Its compute is irrelevant now, but the certification story explains why this chassis was expensive: ISV drivers, a robust board, a quality 15-inch display. None of that survives a decade and a half of platform evolution in practical terms.
The honest numbers

The first-generation i7's four threads run at clock speeds modern efficiency cores exceed, and the reliability reading reflects both age and the known wear patterns of this generation. From roughly $1,300 new to $167 today at about 6.9% per year, projecting to $145 in two years (13.3% lower). The residual value is essentially scrap-plus-screen; the depreciation curve has flattened because there is little left to lose.

Pricier neighbors are the HP ProBook 4730s ($182) and EliteBook 8560w ($184) — one generation newer; cheaper options are the HP 250 G7 ($155) and Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E545 ($157), both materially faster. At this price the whole bracket consists of end-of-life machines, and the 8540w is among the oldest.
Bottom line
A budget-priced piece of computing history with no modern workload to recommend it. The chassis was superb for its era, but CPU, graphics and reliability all read at the floor. Only viable as a display-and-keyboard donor or nostalgia item — any practical buyer should take a newer machine at the same money.
